Supermom Kick-Off 2010

Support for single parents

Single parents in Europe

- What is their situation?
- Which support measures are already existing?
- What is needed to give a real and sustainable support?

These questions led to the development of the "Supermom Kick-Off 2010"-project, which is funded by the German National Agency Bildung für Europa beim Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Program Leonardo da Vinci Transfer of Innovation.

“There is an increasing number of single-parent households across the Union, and they are more vulnerable than other types of families”, stressed Marie-Anne Paraskevas, from European Commission’s DG Employment.

Studies show that almost 20% of European children live in single-parent households and that their poverty risk is almost twice as high as the average poverty risk for all children. This fact only would be sufficient to concentrate on the topic and find support measures that really help lone mothers and fathers to be better (re-)integrated into the labour market.

The Supermom project results from three successful previous projects:

- Empower 1: A workshop to support single parents in their labour market integration and to empower them was developed and tested with great
success
- Empower 2: Also this project found interesting approaches for the support of lone parents that have an influence on "Supermom"
- Supermutti Kick Off 2007: The German partner Helden wider Willen created a film with single parents before and behind the camera. In practical
workshops the participants learnt different professional skills needed in the film and media sector.

The new project, "Supermom Kick-Off 2010" takes the best practices and ideas from these successful initiatives for lone parents. It aims to help the participating single mothers and fathers improve their professional, personal and social skills. This will influence the lone parents’ self-esteem in a positive way, and their chances at the labour market will be increased. Working both together in a group and individually, the participants will learn to express their difficulties and their aspirations, and the support of their tutors and peers will enable them to reach their goals together.

We are looking forward to two great years of cooperation on such an important topic!
