Single parents in Europe

The Research report on the situation of lone parents in Supermom partner countries can be downloaded in the partner languages, intending to serve as an overview of the situation of single parents in each Supermom partner country: Italy, Germany, Poland, France, and the UK (Northern Ireland). The reports gives an insights in key areas such as demographics, modes and availability of childcare, social welfare benefits, employment and education levels of lone parents and poverty among one parent families. Additionally the report looked at the potential for employment within each country‘s film industry. For this data from a range of different sources was carried together and evaluated, so that the report distinctly shows similarities and differences between the situations of single parents in each partner country, putting forward a quantity of interesting facts and figures. The occurring lack of data to the situation of one-parent families in some countries could be considered as an interesting information in itself, possibly revealing that governmental or social attitudes do not consider lone parents as a distinct group that merits study or is in need of targeted support, and above all shows the importance of the projects work to begin with.

The most alarming fact is that in the EU-25 as a whole, as well as in most non-EU countries, the poverty risk for children living in lone-parent households is almost twice as high as the average poverty risk for all children together (34% against 19%). One of the main reasons for this is a high unemployment rate among this family form. Childcare problems, less flexibility as regards place and time, an often lower level of educational qualifications (especially among young mothers) as well as missing recent work experiences minder the chances for lone parents at the labour market.

The report helps to consider and formulate the particular needs of lone parents from different countries and was by this an important basis for the following Supermom workshops.
